Chimney Sweep certifications explained
CSIA Certified Chimney Sweep (CCS)
The Chimney Safety Institute of America certification requires passing an exam on NFPA 211 and the International Residential Code, with renewal every three years. It is the credential most insurers and home inspectors ask about. CSIA also issues a Master Chimney Sweep credential and a Certified Dryer Exhaust Technician (CDET) credential.
NCSG (National Chimney Sweep Guild)
The trade association for the industry. Membership signals a working business, not a tested skill. NCSG also runs the Certified Chimney Professional (CCP) and Certified Chimney Reliner (CCR) credentials, which are tested.
NFI (National Fireplace Institute)
Certifies hearth appliance installers in wood, gas and pellet specialties. Relevant when the job is an insert or stove installation rather than a sweep. NFI has no public list we can check, so NFI badges are Verified only when the company gives us a certificate number.
State licenses
Most states do not license chimney sweeping. Maryland exempts sweeping but requires a home-improvement license for cap installs and rebuilds; Virginia and Connecticut publish contractor license lists we check; California requires a contractor license for work over the state threshold. Where a license applies we show its number and status.
