Common chimney repairs

  • Chimney cap. Keeps rain, animals and debris out of the flue. A missing or rusted cap is the cheapest repair and the most common.
  • Crown. The concrete slab on top of a masonry chimney. Hairline cracks can be sealed; a crown that is breaking up needs rebuilding before water reaches the bricks.
  • Flashing. The metal seal where the chimney meets the roof. Most chimney leaks start here.
  • Liner. A cracked clay liner, or a new stove or insert, usually means a stainless steel liner sized to the appliance. Ask for the Level 2 camera inspection that found the problem.
  • Masonry and tuckpointing. Replacing failed mortar joints or rebuilding the top courses of brick. Schedule it in dry weather; late winter and spring are quieter for the trade.
